SLMM Head of Mission meets LTTE Political Head to discuss the sea incident
SLMM Head of Mission, Major General Ulf Henricsson, arrived in Kilinochchi today, 12 May 2006, for an urgent meeting with LTTE Political Head, S P Tamilselvan, to discuss sea incident on 11 May 2006. Following the meeting Ulf Henricsson and Tamilselvan held separate press meetings.
 Gen. Ulf Henricsson told the press that the discussion was mainly about the incident at sea. He said that more discussion is needed and more work needs to be done on the problem. He said that the violence in the island is unsatisfactory and ways must be found to stop it. He also said that the two parties must take responsibility for the situation. LTTE Political Head, S P Tamilselvan, told the press that he conveyed LTTE’s strong condemnation and dissatisfaction to the SLMM Head about the SLMM Press Release, issued yesterday, immediately after the sea incident. He said that he explained to Henricsson that the CFA came into being only after GoSL realized that they cannot win the war with the LTTE. It was only after LTTE had the capacity to set up a separate state that GoSL came to the CFA. The CFA was therefore based on balance of power and parity of status. Tamilselvan said that SLMM committed a grave error in referring to the LTTE as an armed group. LTTE is running a defacto State with its own army, navy, and judiciary and controls 75% of the Northeast. SLMM role is to maintain the CFA and not to weaken the balance of power and parity of status enshrined in it. He said that he had asked SLMM to clarify this as soon as possible and SLMM has agreed to do so after consulting the Norway facilitator. He warned SLMM that if it weakens the parity of status enshrined in the CFA then SLMM will be responsible for the far reaching consequences resulting from it. Tamilselvan asked if the SLMM, that gives protection to the SLA personnel who are murdering Tamil civilians, has given any protection to the Sea Tigers by being in the Sea Tiger vessel. He invited the SLMM to come on board the Sea Tiger vessel to give protection to the LTTE members and assured the SLMM Head that LTTE will not take any action to threaten to safety of the SLMM monitors on board the Sea Tiger vessels.
