Aerial bombing closes schools, kills one, injures six

On 17 January, Sri Lankan Air Force bombed Kanahapuram area close to Kilinochchi town killing one young man, Murugaih Yogeswaran, aged 33, and injuring six more including one child.

Injured civilians were taken to the Kilinochchi hospital. Their names are: Thanapalasingham Shaaranya, female student aged 16, Sivarasa Suren, male aged 19, Periyan Subesh, male aged 27, Sinnaththurai Sivarasa, male aged 44, Thanapalasingham Mahaluxmy, female aged 49, and Suppar Sinniah, bed ridden male patient aged 82.

Four homes were completely destroyed and many more sustained damages.

Following the bombing all schools and shops in Kilinochchi town were closed. Schools remain closed even the next day.

Kilinochchi Zone Education Office announced all schools will remain closed until Wednesday 23 January due to heightened fear of aerial attack among the pupils.

The bombs fell very close to one of the largest schools in Kilinochchi, Kanahapuram MV. One of the injured students, Shaaranya, is from this school. Her father, Thanpalasingham, has been missing since arrest by the GoSL forces in 1995, indicative of the long genocidal war of the GoSL against the Tamil people.

Many students of Kanahapuram MV sustained injuries caused by fleeing in panic. Parents say that their children came home with blood stained uniforms and injuries.

Welcome day for school freshers

January 17 was the day announced by the Department of Education as the day for welcoming the new students who are just starting school. These are the six year olds. The very young children are given special treatment and garlanded during the welcome. The aim is to give the freshers a day that they will remember for the rest of their learning life with pleasant memories.

This ceremony was also being held at Kanahapuram MV from 9.00am to 10.00am on that day. Children were in a happy mood surrounded by parents and relatives. People at school saw the surveillance planes circling above. But people were confident that they will not drop near the schools because of the well published island wide function all around the island.

Suddenly there was the ear splitting sound of the bombers. The school was filled with cries of help and fear. Parents were seen running with children with garlands around their neck.

Children ran screaming and scattering in all direction with no safety drenches to take cover. School principal took cover near the walls of the well with some children.

This is how these six year old freshers are going to remember their very first special day at school.
