Classes under trees and the rain
Visit any school in Vanni and its enrollment would have bulged in recent times taking in the IDP children. Many schools have started operating two shorter sessions to manage the bulging student size. Yet, many of the schools face shortage of classrooms and smaller classes are forced out to be conducted under trees.

photo of desks and students standing under the umbrella When rain starts, the students attending classes under trees have a drill to follow. The books are collected into their school bags. The chairs are placed on the desks. The school bag goes on the students’ shoulder. Umbrellas are opened and the students stand under them two three per umbrella. They stand there and wait for the rain to stop so that they can restart the classes because all available shelters would already be used up for other classes.
