Vadamaradchi Schools - situation report

There are eleven schools in the Vadanaradchi east area of the Jaffna district. This part of Jaffna is administered by the LTTE. The incessant artillery firing by the SLA has forces the majority of the people to displace together with their school.

Displaced schools always combine with other displaced schools and with one that is functioning in its own buildings and operate together. This invariably created extreme shortage of buildings and resources.

In Vadamarch east the two schools that did not displace are also facing extreme hardships. Only two schools are functioning in their own place at present in Vadamaradchi east. Kaddaikadhu Roman Catholic school is one of these two schools. Three hundred students are enrolled at this school which has classes for Year-1 to Year-11 students.

This school which had its own permanent material buildings was completely destroyed in the 2004 tsunami. Since then the school has been functioning in temporary sheds provided by non-governmental organizations. These were intended to be temporary and have inadequate facilities. The temporary roofs of these temporary sheds are in bad repair though promises were made to repair them so far students are forced to learn in the leaky sheds.

This school too has not received its text books for this year although one term of the three term year is nearly coming to an end.

In the meantime about 50 students from the villages of Vaththirayan, Uduththurai and Aliyavalai, who must travel almost 10 Kilometers to attend this school are facing constant danger of being hit by the incessant artillery firing by the Sri Lanka military during their travel to school.
