Monthly human rights report for November – released

The monthly human rights report of the LTTE Peace Secretariat for the month of November 2007 is available below for downloading.

This monthly report highlights the civilian toll of 73 killed including 13 children and 27 disappeared, damages done to the public and private civilian buildings due to the aerial bombings, destruction of the Mannar economy and the mass arrests of Tamils in Colombo.

Family of six blown to pieces, surviving members unable to hold funeral

At 6.45am SLA fired artillery blew up a family of six, father, mother and four children, to pieces in Red-Barna in Visuvamadu. The four children killed in the family are aged from one to sixteen. Three more IDPs, two of them children aged 10 and 14, were also killed by this shelling incident.

Widespread shelling in Vanni including Theravil and Kaiveli kills entire families

SLA shelling on 16 January at 1.30pm on the IDP settlement in Theravil in Mullaithivu District killed a family of three leaving the one and half year old baby who was also injured with no one to care for him. The baby is receiving treatment at the Puthukudiyiruppu hospital.

A striking feature of the IDP population that has just moved from Tharmapuram to Theravil are the large number of children among them. Babies in mothers’ arms, dawdling toddlers, young children eating raw mangoes, boys playing marbles or digging bunkers, girls playing hopscotch or caring for younger siblings, they are the ones filling the place.
