LTTE releases 40 under-aged cadres in Trincomalee

The special committee appointed by the Head of the LTTE Political Wing under the auspices of the Peace Secretariat to look into the question of under aged cadres, has made arrangements for the release of 40 under-aged cadres in Trincomalee.

Under the tri-partite agreement among UNICEF, LTTE and TRO, these children, are being handed over to the UNICEF for further action. These children apparently fall into the category of those who declare themselves as above 18 years of age at that time of their enrollment and found to be not so, on investigations.

These 40 children were handed over to the representatives of UNICEF at the LTTE Political Office in Sampoor today, 17th April 2004. Associated with Mr. Thilak, Political Head of Trincomalee District were Mr. Bavananthan, Deputy Director General of the LTTE Peace Secretariat and Mr. Thiyagarajah, the NGO Co-ordinator of the LTTE.

Along with Kabarilla, the representative of UNICEF for Trincomalee, Patic Haulden, the representative of the ICRC for Trincomalee, also participated in this meeting. In the media briefing, the representative of UNICEF has welcomed the LTTE's move to release the under-aged cadres and asked them to continue to support in addressing the needs of the children. Mr. Thilak emphasized that the UNICEF has the responsibility in preventing these under-aged children rejoining with the LTTE by addressing their immediate needs such as education, poverty alleviation etc,.
