
Vanni, Vavuniya and Jaffna hold protest against Saturday massacre of an extended family
Protests were held on 26 Monday in Vanni, Vavuniya and Jaffna against the massacre of an extended family on Saturday, 24 May, in a claymore attack carried out by the Deep Penetration Unit of the Sri Lanka military. Sixteen members of the extended family were killed among whom were six school children who attending the same school. A mass funeral was held in the school on Sunday, 25 May where the wail of the families reverberated and affected everyone in the vicinity.
 The following day, Monday, saw protests by the school community in Vanni, Vavuniya and Jaffna. Shop owners too joined the protest in Vavuniya and shut their shops in a show of support to the protesters. In Jaffna school students dared to wear black bands on their hands. In Vanni all educational institutions remained shut to protest the massacre.
