Omanthai checkpoint suddenly closed by Sri Lankan military – patients left in limbo
The Omanthai border checkpoint of the Sri Lankan military was suddenly closed yesterday by the Sri Lankan military. Passengers traveling to and from LTTE area to Vavuniya were forced to abandon their travel plans. Among them were seriously ill patients who were to be taken from Kilinochchi hospital to Vavuniya hospital for life saving treatment.
The Sri Lankan military conducted artillery fire into Puliyankulam the border village of the LTTE area at 11.00am yesterday and closed the checkpoint at 11.20am. The military also ordered the ICRC observation post at the border to vacate. Seriously ill patients are transferred daily from Kilinochchi to Vavuniya hospital. There were 25 patients ready to be transferred from Kilinochch to Vavuniya hospital yesterday. They were to be transported in four ambulances that were ready to take them. Doctors at Kilinochchi hospital expressed concern for the welfare of the patients who could not be sent to Vavuniya for treatment. Yesterday Sri Lankan military also conducted shelling into the Palamoddai village in the LTTE part of Vavuniya.
