Sea and air attack on fishing village injures nine including three children
Nine civilians including three children were injured in a combined air and sea attack by the Sri Lanka Armed Forces around 3.30pm on Sunday, 20 July 2008.
The attack on the coastal village of Anpupuram in the Kilinochchi district was very widespread causing extensive damages. Fifteen fishing boats, fishing nets and some houses in the settlement were damaged. While Sri Lankan Air Force carried out aerial bombardment, sixteen naval boats shelled the village from the seas. Some of the shells fired by the Sri Lanka Navy also fell inland in the Mulankavil area. It is clear that the attack was intended to displace the people from the coastal village as well as from the Mulankavil area. Indeed people have already started to displace swelling the already large number of IDPs in Vanni. The three children injured in the attack are aged 3, 13 and 16.
