Mrs Malini Uthayakumar (27) and her child of 18 months, Uthayakumar Tharshika, who were injured in yesterday’s Sri Lankan Air Force strike in Padahuthurai village in Mannar, succumbed to their injuries in Kilinochchi hospital. The husband and the father of the deceased, who was also injured in the same incident is receiving treatment in the same hospital.
Kilinochchi hospital out of stock says doctor
Many of the Mannar bomb victims mostly children were brought to the Kilinochchi hospital more than 50 Kms away.
The same Kilinochchi hospital administration has for many months now appealed for the due quantity of medicine for the hospital to be sent because the stocks were running low. Hospital has used the available stock with extreme miserliness to make it last longer. The Table below shows the state of the stock for some sample items that will be the basic needs for injury victims. Dr Sathananthan of Kilinochchi hospital has appealed to the ICRC and the UN agencies for the last three months to help alleviate the shortage of medicine. These international agencies are unable to help because the blockade on medicine is due to Ministry of Defense deliberately delaying clearance. Denying humanitarian assistance to children is an issue that comes under the Security Council Resolution 1612 on Children Affected by Armed Conflict.
