TEEDOR Deputy Head warns Vanni people of darker economic times
Deputy President of TEEDOR (Tamil Eelam Economic Development Organization), P Sujan, warned of darker economic times for the people in Vanni and the urgent necessity for self sufficiency during his speech at the opening of a branch of his organization in a suburb of Kilinochchi.
He said that the war clouds hanging over the people could create darker economic times and people must struggle to achieve self sufficiency using naturally available products in their farming methods. He added that TEEDOR is working hard to create food security through self sufficiency in the farming methods. “Hard times have already arrived due to the limitations on the arrival of convoys from the south of the island and we are facing difficulties in obtaining the farming needs such as fertilizer and fuel for our farmers. We are, therefore, trying to produce substitutes for the farming needs that we are unable to bring from the south in convoys”, he said. It must be noted that the drastic reduction in the number of convoys that are allowed by the Sri Lankan military to pass through the Omanthai checkpoint had created extreme shortage of essential food and farming items in Vanni. Efforts made by the international community and INGOs to alleviate the situation has not been very successful. As a result essential items in Vanni cost twice as much as in the south.
