
SLA artillery shelling kills two fishermen in Vadamaradchy East.
Sri Lankan Army stationed at Nargarkovil camp fired a number of artillery shells on Vettilaikkerny civilian settlement in Vadamaradchi East yesterday, 06 August, around 8.30am.
While some fishermen were taking fish from the fishing net at the seashore, one of the artillery shells fell near them, killing two fishermen. They are Thangavelu Kumarenthirarasa (29), father of one child and Ratnam Ganesalingam (45), father of four children. The shell also severely injured another fisherman, Gopalakrishnasamy (47). The injured man was admitted to Kilinochchi Hospital. It has been reported that fishermen’s huts, fishing boats and nets were badly damaged during this shelling.
On the same day around 1.00 pm, the SLA from the Manalaru camp also fired shells on the populated area in Alampil in Mullaiththivu District. An education centre was fully destroyed and more than ten houses sustained some damages. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Air Force dropped bombs on civilian settlements in Nayaru at 1.00 pm and again on Uduppukulam at 2.30 pm both in Mullaiththivu District. Four houses and a shop were destroyed and ten houses and a community centre were partly damaged.
