Iruthayanathar church inside Madhu church complex badly damaged by SLA shelling
The Iruthayanathar church located inside the Madhu church complex has sustained heavy damages from the artillery shells fired inside the Madhu church complex by the Sri Lanka military.
The Sri Lanka military began and is continuing artillery shelling into the Madhu church complex since Saturday 10.00am. The Iruthayathar church and several other building inside the complex have sustained severe damages as the shells fell on and around these buildings. In the meantime a Vanni Tamil daily in its Sunday editorial charged that the assault on the Madhu church complex has no military benefits and is being carried out by the Sri Lanka Government only for political reasons. The paper put forward two reasons for the assault on the church, to celebrate victory among the Sinhala people and to claim to the Sinhala Catholic people that the church has been liberated for their benefit. The paper also charged that in this move the Sri Lanka Government failed to even take into account or care about the danger of damaging the Madhu shrine and its revered statue.
