Swedish legislators in the Wanni

A Swedish delegation of legislators headed by Ms. Anne Marie-Fallenius, Charge des Affairs, Swedish Embassy in Colombo visited the Wanni today the 12th January 2004. They visited the LTTE Peace Secretariat; where they met with Mr. S. P. Tamilselvan, Head of the Political Wing.

This was a familiarization programmed of the Swedish legislators to get an on the spot review of the various projects funded with Sweden's aid. In a meeting with the Political Head that lasted for an hour the team expressed Sweden's concern over the deadlock in the peace process. The Head of the Political Wing explain to the team in detail the sense of frustration that has set in in the minds of the Tamil people relative to the much-expected dividends of peace that is normalcy. He further reiterated the unfortunate plight of the Tamil people as a historical repetition of power struggle in the south, which has always made the Tamils as victims. On being enquired as to whether the Liberation Tigers would continue with their commitment to peace, what may Mr. Tamilselvan stressed that the Tamil people have through out their history of the political struggle, faced similar set backs, but this time round the international initiative has given them hope of a reasonable settlement of the conflict.

The legislators expressed Sweden's solidarity in Sri Lanka's peace process and assured all assistance possible but did not fail to indicate the possible fatigue the international community may develop if this stalemate situation is prolonged. The team was in Jaffna yesterday and arrived in Kilinochchi by land with an agenda to visit the UNICEF sponsored transit camps, White Pigeon Prosthesis Organization catering to civilians who have lost their limbs in land mine blast and Tamil Rehabilitation Organization, which conducts Humanitarian Demining Action. Swedish legislators in the team were Cristina Husmark Perhson, MP, Hillevi Engstr, MP, Lena Adelson, MP, Anne-Marie Fallenius, Charge des Affairs, Swedish Embassy in Colombo.
