Only one ambulance at Kilinochchi hospital to serve the whole District.

The patients in need of emergency medical care at the District hospital in Kilinochchi are not able to get prompt attention due to the non-availability of the required amount of ambulance service. There is only one ambulance in this hospital to serve the whole District. Due to this dearth of ambulance service, emergency cases cannot reach the hospital within due time and hence they undergo risks on account of delayed attention. Certain cases of serious conditions that need intensive care have to be transferred to either Jaffna Teaching Hospital or the base hospital in Vavuniya. These transports are now being carried out only in the ambulances of the Jaffna or Vavuniya hospitals. This involves undue wastage of time as the emergency cases are held up until an ambulance arrives from either Jaffna or Vavuniya.

Last week there was an incident of breakdown in the transport by the ambulance belonging to the Kilinochchi District Hospital. The ambulance broke down at Navatkuli while carrying an emergency case to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. This is the only one ambulance at the Kilinochchi hospital and it carries about nine or ten cases at a time in addition to the caring personnel. This really causes unbearable discomfort to the seriously ailing patients. Even the only one ambulance serving the hospital has long been under repair and it has now exceeded its guaranteed period of durability and has depreciated to the minimum roadworthy condition.
