Unemployed youth protest through the NorthEast about the Government's graduate employment
The unemployed graduates in Killinochchi, Jaffna and Amparai districts protested about the latest graduate appointments announced by the government. The protestors are angry that the Tamil and Muslim unemployed graduates have been ignored in these appointments. The opposition among people about the corrupt practices in these appointments is growing. The government made an election promise that within three months of coming to office they will give jobs to 35,000 graduates. It is only after the list of those who have been given jobs was released that people came to know that Tamils and Muslims have been ignored.
In Jaffna, hundreds of unemployed graduates protested for more than two hours in front of the Jaffna Secretariat. Jaffna district parliamentarians, Sivajilingam, Raviraj and Pathmini Sithamparanathan joined the protests to express their support. A submission of requests was handed to the Government Agent of Jaffna. None of the employees of the secretariat who came for work on that day could get into the building. The employees, including senior officers, were seen standing outside the building along the road. In the costal areas of Amparai, there was a total shutdown. The unemployed graduates have called for a district wise protest. All businesses, government offices, banks, and schools were closed in support of the unemployed graduates. Even the district court in Kalmunai was closed. All cases that were to be heard on that day have been postponed for the 16th. Because the public transport system was not functioning they streets were empty. Roadblocks were also placed on the roads. The military and the police were patrolling the areas and were involved in removing the roadblocks. In Maruthamunai protestors threw stones at passing vehicles and the military. The military attacked the protestors with batons and one injured graduate has been admitted to the hospital. There were no serious incidents. In Ariampathy, there was protest in front of the district office and employees could not enter the building. The unemployed graduates in the Killinochchi district announced that they would hold a protest in front of the district secretariat today. They are protesting about the government ignoring the graduates living in the LTTE controlled area.
