"Humanitarian Assistance to NorthEast will be looked into positively"

The LTTE delegation led by Mr. S.P. Tamilselvan met with a ministerial team at the Italian Foreign Ministry complex in Rome Thursday 12th February 2004.

Minister Ignazio Dipace listened intently to the briefing made by Mr. S.P.Tamilselvan, Head of the LTTE Political Wing on the current political situation and the urgent need to address the humanitarian needs relating to resettlement, rehabilitation and reconstruction of the war-ravaged Northeast. In responding to Mr. Tamilselvan's plea on behalf of the Tamil people, the Minister said "humanitarian assistance to Northeast will be looked into positively". Associated with the minister was Mr. Mario Palma Head of the South Asia desk in the Italian Foreign Ministry.

Later in the day the LTTE delegation met with Senator Fiorella Provera, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and former Italian Prime Minister in the Senate conference room. Associated with the Chairman were Senate President Mr. Giullo Andreotti, Senato-Roma, many times Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and Senator Lady Dott.Ssa Davia Bonfietti.

The senators familiarised themselves with the ground situation in the NorthEast as explained by Mr.Tamilselvan and expressed solidarity in the advocacy of the humanitarian needs of the Tamil people in the context of the peace process and the political conflict in Colombo. The Senate president appreciated the commitment of the LTTE in maintaining the ceasefire agreement and requested that LTTE should not revert to war. Mr. Tamilselvan reiterated the LTTE`s commitment to peace and said that the people of the NorthEast should not be allowed to reach a point of frustration and the international community needs to be innovative in meeting their humanitarian needs so that they may be kept with momentum and commitment to the peace process.
