Regal respect for movement of Sri Lanka military convoys in Jaffna
Sri Lankan military has setup procedures in Jaffna for the movement of military convoys in which regal respect is being awarded to it at the expense of all other civilian activities. When a military convoy is en-route, not a single civilian is permitted to on the road. Anyone found en-route is to be shot on sight. No medical or any other civilian emergency can take precedence over it.
Many scenarios could be painted where young children could be put at risk by being forced to take cover in unknown places when military is en-route. Such a convoy movement usually lasts one and a half hours. Listening to the Sri Lankan military’s radio service and working out the routes and times is no trivial matter. If children happen to be on the road and suddenly find themselves to be in the way of a military convoy they must take cover in any unknown places nearby putting themselves at risk. The civilian population in Jaffna is close to 600,000 thousand and is the second most densely populated in the island next only to Colombo. Yet, Sri Lanka military rule of Jaffna demands regal respect to itself at the expense of civilians in such a densely populated area.
