Security Forces and the LTTE meet at Vavunativu

Head of the political wing for Batti-Amparai area, Mr. Kousalyan, while talking to the media following the meeting said, "We have held many such meetings in the past. We are monitoring very carefully the progress related to these meeting. We have explained to them the fear among the people and the excessive checkpoint activities that is affecting the traveling public. They have told us that they will ensure that similar incidents do not happen in the future. If they do not take the necessary actions to keep these promises we will have to rethink the purpose of these meetings. However, we have decided to meet again on 20-11.2004".

Mr. Kousalyan added, "We did not discuss any incidents in particular at the meeting. However, we have told them very clearly that the government forces must investigate and take constructive legal actions when murders are committed in the government-controlled area. We have also told them that we are prepared cooperate in this fully if needed".

He further clarified to the media as follows, "We have explained a few things through these meetings. We are watching to see if they are being acted upon. What we would like to emphasize is the following. No serious incidents have taken place in the areas under our control. We are prepared to take responsibility for any incidents in the areas under our control and take the necessary legal actions. If any incidents occur in the areas under their control they must take the responsibility and take the necessary legal action. We have said this to them".

Following representatives of the LTTE attended the meeting: Kousalyan, Head of the Political Wing for Batti-Amparai, Mr. Kuyilinpan - Amparai district's political wing head, Mr. Marcel, Mr. Thayamohan - Head of Batti-Amparai Administrative Division and official Mr. Manoch.

Following Sri Lankan security personnel attended the meeting: Brig.V.Wijeyagoonawardena GOC 23 Division HQ; Col A L Amaratunga 233 Bde Cdr; Mr.Mahesh Samaradiwakara SSP,Batticaloa District; Mr.Keeragala Assistant Superintendent of police; and Mr.Ratnayake SSP of STF Batticaloa and Amparai.
