Tamils youths arrested and disappeared in Trincomalee

Six youths staying at the St. Antony's Church Welfare Centre in Muthur in Trincomalee district were arrested by the Sri Lanka Army on 31 March midnight. Although the SLA told the parents that that the youths are being taken for interrogation, the youths have not been released yet. The parents of the arrested appealed to the human rights organizations to obtain their sons’ release.

The arrested youths are, Arulnayagam Joseph Jesuthasan aged 25, Sebastian Joseph Jebatheepan aged 28, Pushparajah Pushpakanthan aged 20, Muharasa Murali aged 22, Prakash Sripaskaran aged 28, and Selvanayagam Amalraj aged 25.

Muthur residents who fled their homes due to violence in August, stayed on in the Welfare Centers in Trincomalee town. Later, some people moved back to Muthur town. Many go to the nearest Catholic churches during nights for security.

Another young family man from Kankuveli in Muthur was abducted by SLA who came in a motorbike on the afternoon of 28 March. The man was blindfolded and taken away in the motorbike towards Thehiyaththakandiya, a neighboring Sinhala village. His whereabouts are not yet known. The disappeared man is Munusamy Kalirasa aged 34.

Two other civilians arrested by the armed forces at Alankerny in Kinniya have also not been released so far. Both persons were arrested in a cordon and search operation conducted last week.

Another person from Anpuvalipuram and another from Ilinganagar in Uppuveli Police division were taken away forcefully by SLA that came in a van on 2 April. Their whereabouts are not yet known.

SLA arrests 15 Tamils in Batticaloa

Sri Lanka Army conducted a cordon and search operation in the villages of Siththandy, Morakkoddanchenai and Santhively in in Batticaloa district around 2:30 p.m. on 4th April and arrested 15 persons.

The SLA also did door to door check and conducted a through search inside the houses. They also examined the identity cards of the persons. None of the arrested has been released so far.

Mechanic shot dead in Kalmunai-Batticaloa

A motor mechanic was shot and killed by the SLA and members of paramilitary who came on a motor bike around 5:00 p.m at Pandiruppu, Kalmunai in Amparai district. The killers shot the mechanic while he was standing in front of his motor repair garage located near Maruthamunai on Kalmunai main street.

The victim was identified as Arunalsalam Jute Jeyakumar aged 29, a father of one child from Manalchenai, Kalmunai.

Labourer shot dead in Eravur-Batticaloa

A labourer was taken away from his house by the SLA and members of paramilitary on 2nd April, around 9:05 p.m for interrogation and shot and killed him at Parathipuram in Aiyankerny. He succumbed to his wounds while being rushed to Eravur hospital. The victim was identified as Kanapathipillai Suresh aged 21, a resident of Parathipuram, Aiyankerny. He worked as a labourer in rice grinding mill in Kalmunai.

Kondavil-Jaffna: youth abducted and killed

A youth was abducted by the SLA and paramilitary near Kondavil Hindu Vidyalayam while returning home after transporting his sister to her school around 8.30am on 4th April. Theivendiran Sasitharan aged 20 is a resident of Kondavil. Half an hour later his body with gun shot wounds was found near station road in Kondavil. The SLA and members of paramilitary on four motor cycles took abducted youth to an isolated place adjoining the Jaffna Secretariat Store near Kondavil Railway station for questioning and while being interrogated Theivendiran broke free from the abductors. He was chased by the armed gang and shot dead in an adjoining farm land.

Youth's body with gunshot wounds recovered in Meesalai

The body of an unidentified youth with hands bound and with several gunshot wounds was recovered in shrub jungles between Kanagampuliyadi Junction and Puthur on 4th April morning. Local residents said there was heavy presence of Sri Lanka Army sin the area on previous night and they heard several gun shots during the night. The youth must have been abducted on 3rd April and brought to Meesalai North area and shot during the night.

Husband and wife killed in SLA claymore attack

A husband and wife were killed in Claymore attack of the LRRP unit of SLA in Palampitty-Nattakandal road around 1.45pm today. Raveendran Ravi aged 54 and his wife Sinthu aged 42 were cycling through this road when they were attacked by the SLA. The victims are parents of four children. They displaced from Pavatkulam, Vavuniya and were living in Periyathampanai in Thadsinamaruthamadu.

SLAF bombs Vadamaraadchi East villages

Sri Lanka Air Force Kfir bombers flew over Vadamaradchi East around 1.20pm today and bombed Iyakkachchi and Kaddaikkaadu villages Vadamaradchi East in Jaffna district. A few houses were damaged in the attack. There is no civilian casualty since the people of these areas displaced last August after heavy shelling and MBRL attacks.
