
7000 people displaced due to shelling in Batticaloa
Continuous shelling by the Sri Lankan armed forces in Batticaloa escalated into large scale attacks today, 8 March 2007. Since this morning, Sri Lankan armed forces are firing artillery shells and mortar shells into almost all parts of the LTTE administered areas in Batticaloa.
Sri Lankan military is launching its attacks from Pulukkunavai, Komanthurai, Webber stadium and Sathurukondan camps. People from Kokkaddicholai, 40th village, Palukamam, Kurukkalmadam, Poratheevu, Paddipalai, and Thravai areas in Batticaloa have been displaced to Kaluvanchikkudy in SLA controlled area due to this indiscriminate attacks. The displaced people were moving by the Manmunai and Ampilanthurai routes to SLA administered areas. Special Task Force (STF) of the Sri Lankan military has closed these routes since this morning. More than 7000 people from 2000 families have displaced so far through Paddiruppu to SLA controlled areas. Mean while, Sri Lankan military’s another attempt to move from the Black bridge towards LTTE area of Koduvamadhu, was thwarted this morning. One body of Sri Lankan military was also recovered by the LTTE.
