
Artillery shells fired by SLA fall inside a school premises
Several artillery shells fired by the Sri Lankan military from its Forward Defense Line (FDL) positions at Iranai-illuppankulam, Nochchikulam and Kalmadu in Vavuniya fell inside the Kovil-Kunchukulam Government School on 17 April around 12 noon. 334 students and nine teachers were at school at that time. Luckily no one was hurt. Many of the shells exploded in the school playground and some fell very near classrooms and exploded. Students and teachers later counted more than 23 shells that fell and exploded inside the school complex.
When the shells began to fall students and teachers ran outside and the school was closed for the day. The school has presently absorbed an additional, 163 students from Methar Pannikar Makilankulam Kanista Vidhyalayam, 148 students from Palamoddai Government Tamil Mixed School and 85 students from Navvy Government Tamil Mixed School. These students displaced from their villages due fear of shelling by the Sri Lankan military. The Kovil-Kunchukulam school is located 4.5 Kilometers from the FDL. The artillery fire by the SLA over the last two days has also badly damaged civilian settlements of in the villages mentioned above. There was no loss of life because people had already displaced from these villages. However, houses, productive tress and livestock have been destroyed and killed by the intense shelling. Bodies of three young fathers found in Vavuniya The bodies of three young fathers who were earlier abducted by paramilitaries were discovered from the Koomankulam area yesterday. The three men were abducted from their homes in Kaththar-Sinnakulam on 16 April night. The three men are labourers and they are, Subramanium aged 28,Chandrasekaran aged 24 and Sinnathurai Vigneswaran aged 24. Vavuniya Judge Ilancheliyan who conducted the investigations ordered that statements are to be obtained from the military chiefs of the area. Two fishermen sot killed at sea off Jaffna coast Two fishermen out fishing off the coast of Kytes in Jaffna on 17 April afternoon were shot and killed by the Sri Lankan Navy. Their bodies were handed to the Jaffna teaching hospital by the Navy. The fishermen were later identified by their relatives as, Gnanaruban Routson and Robert Thevathas.
