LTTE release 35 under aged cadres
The special committee appointed by the Head of the LTTE Political Wing under the auspices of the Peace Secretariat to look into the question of under aged cadres, visited Trincomalee last week and investigated into the background of children identified as below 18 years and has made arrangements for their release.
Under the tri-partite agreement between UNICEF, LTTE and TRO, these children, in the absence of a transit camp in Trincomalee, are being handed over to the UNICEF for further action. These children apparently fall into the category of those who declare themselves as above 18 years of age at that time of their enrollment and found to be not so on investigation. These 35 children were handed over to the representatives of the UNICEF at the LTTE Political Office in Sampoor today, the 21st March 2004. Associated with Mr. Thilak, Political Head of Trincomalee District were Miss. Karunya, Political Head - Women, Trincomalee District M/s Bhavananthan, Deputy Director, LTTE Peace Secretariat and Thiyagarajah, the NGO Co-ordinator. Along with Kabarilla, the representative of UNICEF for Trincomalee, Dr.Yasmin Haque> Programme coordinator and Christine Waltkins also participated in this meeting.
