Canadian HC assures Canada's full support to the peace process

"The Canadian Government is fully committed to take all endeavours to make the peace process a success" said Valerie Raymond, High Commissioner for Canada in Sri Lanka when she met with Mr. S.P. Tamilselvan, Head of the Political wing of the LTTE in the Kilnochchi Peace Secretariat today, 19th September.

The High Commissioner and her team arrived in Kilinochchi around 10.00 am by land from Jaffna. Associated with the High Commissioner in the meeting, were Ms Elizabeth Baldwin-Jones, Political/Economic Counsellor and Mr. Joe William, Senior Development Officer CIDA.

In an informal meeting with the political chief Ms. Valerie familiarised herself with the current status of the Interim Administration proposals and the general political situation. Mr. Tamilselvan explained at length the realistic nature of the proposals that have been formulated with inputs from constitutional experts and eminent people from the field of international laws among the Tamil Diaspora. He made specific mention of the participation of Messrs Bob Rae and David Cameron from the Canadian Forum of Federation and expressed gratitude for their presence and valuable suggestions in formulating the proposals.

The high Commissioner expressed satisfaction over the commitment of the LTTE towards achieving a politically negotiated settlement and encouraged the Political Head to move forward steadfastly in spite of any obstacles that are usually expected in such protracted conflict resolutions. Associated with the High Commissioner in the meeting, were Ms Elizabeth Baldwin-Jones, Political/Economic Counsellor and Mr. Joe William, Senior Development Officer CIDA.

On conclusion of the meeting the High Commissioner met with the media men and said,

"I have a constructive discussion with Mr. Tamilselvan on behalf of the Government of Canada, I have urged him to return to face to face peace talks as soon as possible and once the LTTE has returned to talks we urge them to stay the course until a final political settlement has been achieved. We feel that development can continue on a parallel track to improve the lives of the people at the same time as the political negotiations are continuing".

"The Government of Canada has been active in development systems in the conflict affected areas for many years now".
