"Dragging the country to war is not the alternative to non-delivery of the election pledges"
If the People's Alliance is unable to deliver their election promises, the Government must not drag the country to a protracted war so stated the opposition Leader Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe.
He delivered this strong worded statement in his keynote address at the 58th annual general meeting of the United National Party at SiriKotha. He further, stated the United National Party did not make any un-achievable pledges in front of our UNP supporters. As the opposition party to the Government we have the responsibility to safeguard the citizens rights. The government has the responsibility to take forward these citizens rights and fulfil their election pledges. It is our responsibility to remind the Government of this. The people should not suffer for another two years. I am demanding that this government, if it is unable to fulfil their election promises they must not drag the country to a war as an alternative. The Government should quickly take the proposals submitted by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam for an Interim Self - Governing Authority as the basis for future Peace negotiations, if they fail to do this then the country will face a downward path to difficulties and ruin.
