Lt. Col Thileepan is remembered in Tamil homelandTamil homeland celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Lt. Col. Thileepan, a martyr who began a fast for the freedom of the Tamil people in 1987 on this date.
He put forward five requests to the government of India which had sent its military to the Tamil homeland. His requests included the removal of the Sri Lankan military from schools and halting of new Sinhala settlements. However the government of India remained insensitive to the requests of Martyr Thileepan. He attained martyrdom on the 12th day of his fast on 26th September 1987. Tamil National Leader participated in the commomerations. Tamil people in the Northeast and all over the world commemorate the sacrifice of Martyr Thileepan for the 12 days beginning today. In Tamil homeland, Departments, Commercial institutions, schools and private co-operations will be commemorating the sacrifice of Martyr Thileepan. 15 September 2007
