LTTE part of Batticaloa under attack

Massive displacement and human misery in ancient Tamil Batticaloa villages

People in the LTTE administered parts of Batticaloa district have been forced to displace en-masse due to continuous artillery fire into civilian settlements. Two civilians have already been killed by the shelling and a child was injured. Fearful of the human misery caused by the Sri Lankan military shelling in Vaharai, people in Batticaloa are displacing in large scale.

The entire population of 20,000 people in the Paddippalai Divisional Secretariat, 20,000 people from the Eravur Divisional Secretariat, 15,000 people from the Vavunathivu Divisional Secretariat and more than 15,000 people from the Kiran Divisional Secretariat has displaced. People in the Vellaveli Divisional Secretariat are also displacing. The Manmunai route which was closed by the military was opened under pressure from the Government Agent of Batticaloa and people are moving into GoSL area by this route.

Some of these villages like Kokkadichchoali in Batticaloa are ancient Tamil villages that were developed towns before the Europeans set foot in the island. Kokkadichcholai is the host to an ancient temple, Thanthontreeswaran temple, which is one of the five ancient Sivan temples set along the coast of Tamil homeland. The other four are Munneswaram temple in Puththalam Thiruketheeswaram temple in Mannar, Naguleswaram temple in Jaffna, and Koneswaram temple in Trincomalee.
