Poonahari civilian settlement comes under SLA artillery barrage

One civilian was injured and many houses were damaged

Sri Lankan military launched an artillery barrage from Thenmaradchy Sri Lankan military camp towards Poonahari civilian settlements on 19 August 2007.

Chellappa Thankarasa aged 28 was severely injured in the attack. Many houses were also damaged by this heavy shelling towards Netpulavu civilian settlement around 1.50 pm. Thankarasa who was displaced from Netpulavu by Sri Lankan military offensives last year had returned on that day to collect coconuts from his Netpulavu land.

Thankarasa was rushed to Kilinochchi general hospital by his neighbour who was with him.

I was shocked when nearly 30 artillery shells fell around my house and coconut fields. At that time, I thought I was going to die and who is going to look after my children. I couldn’t believe that I have survived”, injured Thankarasa who is getting treatment in the hospital said.

TNA MP’s brother was killed by the GoSL operated forces in Batticaloa

Tamil National Alliance Batticaloa district parliamentarian S Jeyananthamoorthy's brother S Thiyagachandra was shot and killed by the Sri Lankan government operated forces in Oaddamaavadi, Valaichcheanai in Batticaloa at 6:30 pm yesterday, 20 August 2007.

On 21 July 2006, MP Jeyananthamoorthy’s family was also targeted by the GoSL operated forces but they narrowly escaped.

His brother Thiyagachandra, 54, father of two, was shot dead when he was returning home from Valaichcheanai paper factory where he is an employee.

Another demining worker was killed by GoSL operated forces in Jaffna

A Danish demining aid worker was shot and killed and another was injured by the Sri Lankan military intelligence unit yesterday morning, 20 August 2007.

They were going to work from Puliyankoodal to Jaffna town through the Pannai bridge. Two Sri Lankan military intelligence unit members with EPDP armed men followed them and opened fire in front of Jaffna Hindu College.

Sivasami Sritharan aged 31, from Puliynkoodal, was killed and his friend Jukiddan aged 21 also from Puliynkoodal was injured.
