TNA legislators Confab with LTTE Heads in Kilinochchi.

Twenty two TNA legislators representing the NorthEast attended a meeting with the LTTE chief of the Political Division in Kilinochchi today 30 August.

At the outset, Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan presented an overview and outcome of the various meetings he had with the Norwegian facilitators, the SLMM, and the Diplomatic community including the EU Troika. Reminding the legislators of the overwhelming mandate the Tamil people gave in the last general election and the moral responsibility thus entrusted to all of us, Mr. Tamilselvan said that the primary concern of the legislators should be to take measures that would alleviate the hardships caused by the war and deliver to the people the basic dividends of peace, normalcy. Reiterating the importance of the Cease Fire Agreement and the various clauses enshrined therein to build confidence and restore normalcy, Mr.Tamilselvan said that the legislators do have the necessary mandate of the people to make parliament the right forum to insist on the government as one party to the CFA, to deliver on the pledges made therein.

"The ISGA is the right mechanism to address urgent humanitarian needs of a people who have faced unprecedented destruction of lives and infrastructure and it is only through addressing these need of the people effectively that we can make them real partners in the peace process and this is what the Tamil people overwhelmingly expressed in their mandate" continued Mr.Tamilselvan. The legislators were requested to consolidate and work within and outside parliament to reactivate the peace process. The parliamentarians, the Political Chief said, have a responsibility to take this message of the Tamil people to the south and thereby create an awareness in the minds of the Sinhalese people about Tamil aspirations and also to allay the imaginary fear about the ISGA that is being floated around by scheming politicians in the south.

All the parliamentarians responded positively to the concerns expressed by Mr. Tamilselvan and after lengthy discussions formed groups among themselves for activities within parliament, awareness programmes in the south, advocacy in the Diplomatic community and vigilance movements on Tamil nationalism. This meeting that lasted for three hours was also attended by Secretary General of the LTTE Peace Secretariat and the LTTE District political Heads.
