Tamil people are facing genocide while the world watches
- LTTE Spokesperson for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs
On this international human rights day, we like to draw the attention of the people of the world to the genocide facing the Tamil people by the Sri Lanka State. Almost every grave human rights violations, described in the human rights instruments of the United Nations, are being violated against the Tamil people by this State.
Tamil National Leader, V Pirapaharan, also noted in his annual 2007 Heroes Day speech, “The Sinhala State’s war of genocide destroyed the peaceful life of the Tamils. It turned the Tamils into refugees in their own homeland, ruined their nation’s social and economical infrastructure and plunged them into unprecedented hardships. While our motherland, caught within gruesome Sinhala military rule, is destroyed, Sinhalisation of our historic territory is going on under the pretexts of High Security Zones and Free Trade Zones…..The unjust war, the economic blockade, the restrictions on our people’s freedom of movement, the killing of thousands, the displacement of hundreds of thousands, have all deeply wounded the Tamil psyche.” This year alone, 580 Tamil civilians have been killed and 422 disappeared by the Sri Lanka State. Among those killed and disappeared are hundreds of children. The world is standing by and just watching these gruesome death squad activities of the Sri Lanka State. This is the context in which the Tamil people are marking this international human rights day.
