Veteran journalist Nadesan killed in Batticaloa
A prominent journalist and electronic media person, fondly respected by the Tamil speaking world was shot dead at the eastern coastal town of Batticaloa Monday morning by an unidentified gunman.
One of the most popular and energetic media persons Mr. G. Nadesan was on his mobike to his office at the Inland Revenue Department at Batticaloa when he was gunned down at 8.45 a.m. about two hundred meters before his destination.
This incident causing concern among the media and the Tamil readership in Sri Lanka and abroad is further reported as follows.
Mr. Nadesan, who has been contributing to print as well as electronic media over two decades, left home for his duty at the Inland Revenue Department in Batticaloa. He was intercepted by an armed person who shot him at his chest with a 9mm pistol. Mr. Nadesan succumbed to his injury on the spot.
Following the incident the police went to the spot and found Mr. Nadesan's mobike on the wayside and his body in a canal and took charge of both for investigation. None of the eye witnesses have not thenceforth helped the police with their information. The police took steps for the magisterial inquiry and it was conducted by the Batticaloa District Magistrate on the site of the crime. The magistrate viewed the body and ordered it to be handed over at the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for the judicial medical officer's report. After the post mortem examination at the hospital Mr. Nadesan's body was handed over to his relatives on Monday evening.
Eversince this dastardly act of murder there has been tension and panic among the public in the city of Batticaloa and around. This situation has been an obstacle to the co-operation of the public coming forth to the police. The journalist Mr. Nadesan who has been killed, has also served as a news reporter from Batticaloa to the Tamil daily Veerakesari published in Colombo and to the International Broadcasting Co-operation (IBC) in London and to some more print and electronic media in Sri Lanka and abroad.
Mr. Nadesan, father of four children and aged 50 hailed from Nelliyadi, a town in North Jaffna District in Sri Lanka. He detailed in his coloumns in the Veerakesari Weekly about the activities and several killings of the LTTE renegade Karuna and thereby raised doubts and aroused suspicion concerning the security situation in the Batticaloa District. Media Organisations inland and abroad have strongly condemned this murder. The LTTE has vehemently condemned this brutal murder and posthumously honoured him with the title of patriot. Mr. Nadesan's remains were arranged to be taken to Trincomalee, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Jaffna for the public to pay their last respect, enroute to his home town, Nelliyadi where cremation will take place and the time is yet to be announced.
