SLA disturbs political works in Uvarmalai

Seven LTTE cadres, who went to the Uvarmalai area in the Trincomalee district, were surrounded by Sri Lankan military. They were delayed for one hour. Three female and four male LTTE cadres were on their way to perform their political duties when they were surrounded by military forces on their "field bikes". Soon after hundreds of military personnel who came that way on jeeps also joined the other military personnel and surrounded the LTTE cadres.

The LTTE's Trincomalee district Political Head, Mr. Elilan, on hearing the incident came to the scene and talked to the military personnel. The military personnel told Mr. Elilan that they must search the cadres because the cadres are carrying arms. Mr. Elilan informed them that the cadres do not have any weapons and that they are going only to do their political duties. Mr. Elilan requested the military personnel to not disrupt the work of the cadres unnecessarily. The military personnel then said that the belts worn by the female cadres are military equipment and that it is a violation of the cease-fire agreement. Elilan informed them that this issue has been discussed in the past and that it has already been decided that the cadres can wear their belts. At last the military left. After they have left the SLMM staff arrived at the scene. Mr. Elilan lodged a complaint with the SLMM that the military is acting with the aim of disrupting the political work of the cadres and that this is in violation of the cease-fire agreement.
