Civilians displacing from north and south of LTTE area
People from Nedunkerni in Vavuniya and Iyakkachchi in Kilinochchi have started to displace due to deliberate targeting of their settlements by the Sri Lankan military’s shelling.
Sri Lanka military stationed in Kilali, Muhamail and Nagarkovil in Jaffna have been shelling civilian settlements and coastal areas where Tamil fishermen work. The people from Iyakkachchi, Seranpattu and Vadamaradchi east areas who have not already displaced have also begun to displace due to this indiscriminate shelling. Sri Lanka military stationed in Mankindimalai in Vavuniya is also indiscriminately shelling into civilian settlements in Nednkerni. This was most intense on 4 June when two civilians were injured in the shelling. Following this incident people from Nedunkerni have also begun to displace with their belongings. The main livelihood of the people from this region is rice cultivation. They are now forced to leave their cultivated land that would result in the destruction of their cultivation. Schools in Nedunkerni have also stopped functioning and will be forced to displace with the people.
