Jaffna peninsula brought to standstill

All activities in the Jaffna peninsula consequent to a hartal announced by Jaffna district civilian based organizations and private bus operators union. On the 9th of December an SLAS soldier opened fire on civilians and injured two in the Jaffna bus stand. The civilian based organizations in the Jaffna peninsula organized this hartal protesting against the military excess. Private buses and three wheelers did not operate and therefore public flow into the city was very much minimal. Northern Region Transport Board buses provided a skeleton service for the students appearing for G.C.E.O/L examination.

Attendance in the Jaffna Secretariat, the AGA office and other Government institutions was very much limited. In the Jaffna teaching hospital only the emergency service functioned and the OPD attendance too very much less. Police and military presence in the public thoroughfares in all parts of the peninsula was conspicuously sealed.

The organizers of this civilian based hartal thanked the public institutions and cooperative establishments for having consolidated their support to express the Tamil people's feeling of frustration and despair towards military violations.
