Jaffna University community receive death threats
Three hundred staff and students of Jaffna University were threatened with death for supporting the LTTE in notices that were posted all over Jaffna University premises overnight on 14 May 2007.
The names of the 300 students and staff were listed from each department in the notices. Death threats through pamphlets have become a culture among the Sri Lankan military which just a few days ago threatened school students who were selling the school student magazine called “Chalaram” (window), a monthly magazine that includes contributions from the students in schools throughout Jaffna. The education community has been targeted by Sri Lankan military which is determined to suppress the voices that are raised against the atrocities of the military and the paramilitary operated by them. To date seven school students have disappeared after arrest by the Sri Lankan military. At least two University students have also disappeared after arrest. Four University students have been shot and killed by the military. Two more students suffered permanent injuries following torture by the military.
