Two fishermen disappear off Mullaithivu sea
Following Sri Lankan Navy gunfire in the area two fishermen who went fishing at 2.30am on Thursday in the Mullaithivu sea near Puthmaaththalan have failed to return home even by Friday evening. Normally they will be back home by the same day late morning.
Karunaharan Jegatheeswaran, aged 22, and Sivananthan Suresh, aged 32, are from Vadamaradchi east and were displaced in August fearing shelling of their homes in Vadamaradchi east. They were living in Puthmaaththalan in Mullaithivu. Recently there have been frequent attacks by the Sri Lanan Navy on fishermen at sea. On 10 February, Mullaithivu fishermen came under attack from the Sri Lankan Navy and the fishermen cut off their nets from their boats and rushed to the shore to safe their lives. Also on 5 February, Ponnaih Yogan and his father-in-law Kandasamy were at sea fishing in the Vadamaradchi seas off the northern coast of Jaffna when they were attacked. They jumped off their boats and swam several hours to reach the shore.
