Norwegian Facilitators meet Tamil National Leader

A team of Norwegian delegates comprising Deputy Foreign Minister H.E.Vidar Helgesan, special envoy Erik Solheim and Norwegian Ambassador Hans Brattskar met with Tamil National Leader Mr.V.Prabhakaran in the LTTE political Head Quarters in Kilinochchi today 13th November.

The team arrived by an SLAF helicopter around 8.45 in the morning. Their meeting with the Tamil National Leader lasted for two hours. Associated with the National Leader in the meeting were Mr. S.P.Tamilselvan, Head of the Political wing and Legal Advisor Mr.V.Rudrakumaran.

What was discussed in the meeting, was summarised by Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan in a Press briefing as follows:

"Our National Leader Mr.V.Prabhakaran was very keen in conveying his sense of urgency to ascertain the position of the Ceasefire Agreement and the peace process in general from the Norwegian team. Mr.Vidar Helhesan the Deputy Foreign Minister assured the Tamil National Leader that their discussions with the Sri Lankan President and the Prime Minister makes them confident that the Ceasefire Agreement will be maintained without any change and the functions of the SLMM will continue as usual.

Mr.Prabhakaran expressed the LTTE's firm commitment to continue with the political negotiations. We are watching the political developments in the south keenly and patiently and hope that the state of confusion in Colombo will soon come to an end, enabling the peace process to move forwards. At the time of handing over the Interim Administration proposals to the Norwegian facilitators we requested the facilitators to arrange an early meeting with the GOSL with a view to finalise it and re-activate the political negotiations. Unfortunately though, the developments in the Colombo political base, have resulted in a state of confusion deadlocking the entire process.

However the LTTE will remain committed to peace. The Ceasefire Agreement being the bedrock of the political negotiations should be maintained in full. The Tamil nation has historical experience of the various obstacles that have appeared in past negotiations and therefore is highly disappointed that this time round, especially with a third party facilitation, the power struggle in Colombo has again brought about an undesirable situation.

The Norwegian Facilitators have given us the assurance that they will, in their further discussion, convey the sentiments expressed by the Tamil National Leader to those in the Government side and affirmed their commitment as facilitators to the peace process."
