Sri Lanka Special Task Force (STF) stealing from Tamil homes in Amparai

Displaced Tamil families from Kanchiankuda in Amparai expressed frustration that valuable properties from their homes are being stolen by the STF.

Furniture, doors and window and roof tiles are among the items being regularly stolen by the STF. The people from Kanchirankuda displaced in January 2007 following military offensives.

The STF have also stolen tractors used for ploughing the fields from the farmers and taken them to their camp.

Latest on Sri Lanka’s bombing and shelling

Following the killing of a preschool child in Sundikulam in the Sri Lankan aerial bombing on 23 May, parents are refusing to send their preschoolers to the preschool. The preschool coordinator of the nearby “Amuthasurabi” preschool expressed fear that this preschool will be forced to close if the parents continue to refuse to send their preschoolers to this center.

On 23 May, Sri Lankan Air Force bombed Sunkulam area in which a preschooler and another student were killed. A mother and her child were injured in the bombing and ten homes were destroyed.

In the meantime, people in Mannar continue to face multiple displacements as Sri Lanka military starts shelling the areas where the displaced people had taken refuge. People from Madhu and Manthai West were displaced to Mullaithivu and Manthai East areas. The Sri Lanka military is presently targeting these areas as well forcing the people to displace again. The displaced people are facing immense hardships with young children and with no roofs over their heads.
