SLA artillery fire continues to kill and maim IDPs in Vanni

On 8 December, two successive artillery attacks, one on Vaddakachchi in the morning and another around 1.00pm caused large scale death and injuries among the IDP population that had taken refuge in Vaddakachchi and Tharmapuram.

An eleven month old baby, three women and two men were killed. A further 27 IDPs, including eight children and ten women were injured and are receiving treatment at Tharmapuram hospital.

The second artillery attack in Tharmapuram is the current focal point of the Vanni IDP population, with the displaced Kilinochchi District Secretariat also located there. The displaced Kilinochchi District Hospital too is in Tharmapuram and the afternoon artillery attack was less than 100 meters from it. The fear, havoc and carnage caused by this attack were therefore immense.

Indeed, until now, civilians have been able to displace away from shelling range. Thus unlike in the case of aerial bombardments, the total death and injuries due to shelling have been kept to a minimum. The areas, like Vaddakachchi and Thramapuram, presently occupied by the IDPs, who have displaced from the rest of the Vanni are very densely populated with them. These IDPs cannot displace anymore. Therefore any further shelling attacks will cause immense civilian casualties as the one on 8 December.
