Situation in eastern areas recently vacated by SLA
Sri Lankan Special Task Force occupied Thangavelayuthapuram five months ago and civilian fled the area leaving everything fearing their presence.
Two days ago the Sri Lankan Police Special Task Force (STF) stationed here withdrew from this village. A brief description of what they have done in this village during their five months stay is very revealing. The withdrawing STF has stolen properties in the homes of the people who displaced when the STF moved in. The STF did not even leave behind the roofing materials on the houses when they left. Shop owners left behind their shop with all the stocks when they displaced in a hurry. All of these shops have been destroyed and all the stock in the shops was stolen.
The Thangavelayuthapuram Pillayar temple has been converted into a bar for consuming alcohol by the STF. A newly built preschool near the Thangavelayuthapuram junction built with the financial assistance of the Government of Netherland has been flattened. The office of ZOA international agency too was destroyed and all the equipment in it was stolen. This performance by the STF is a telling symbol of how they conduct themselves when they occupy Tamil villages hidden away from the view of the international observers.
