The Day of Genocide is observed in Amparai

The mass massacre of Tamils at Amparai is remembered and observed as the "Day of Genocide" at Amparai today the 19th February 2004. In the course of Liberation struggle of the past innocent Tamils were shot to death, burnt alive and buried alive by the Sri Lankan Security Forces, Home guards and other groups that jointly operated with the Security Forces at various locations at Amparai.

As a mark of remembrance of these incidents of mass massacres the 19th day of February was declared as the "Black Day of Genocide" in Tamil Eelam. Of these mass massacres especially the incident at Thangavelayuthapuram in Idumpankulam area, where one hundred and eight Tamil peasants working in their paddy fields were shot at and burnt in haystacks thrown over, is exclusively remembered on this day. While having declared this day as "the Day of the Amparai District Tamil genocide" the Amparai District Thamilar Perumantram also made arrangements to observe this day as one of resurgence with the slogan "Every time we fall we rise, and resolute we are to attain liberation."

The main agenda of the Amparai District Tamil Genocide Day took place at the Akkaraipattu Tharmasangari grounds at 9.00am today. Further there were resurgent rallies from various Tamil areas of the District converging at the Tharmarasangari grounds. There was a pageantry of procession featured with decorated cars depicting the atrocities and genocides committed by the state security forces.

In addition, the bells at temples and churches rang and mass services were conducted at churches and religious rites performed at temples as a mark of respect for the untimely departed souls.

A foundation stone was laid to erect a memorial tomb at Idumpankulam junction at Thandiyadi for the remembrance of the dead.

The VIPs of the LTTE and former parliamentarians participated in the proceedings.
