SLMM meets LTTE
In a meeting convened on an initiative by the LTTE, the Head of the SLMM Maj. General Tryggve Tellefsen, his deputy Hagrup Haughland, all the District Heads of SLMM, the Local Monitoring Committee (LMC) members and the LTTE political heads of the various districts, were addressed by Mr. S.P. Tamilselvan, Head of the Political Wing of the LTTE, in the headquarters in Kilinochchi.
The Head of the SLMM and his team arrived in Kilinochchi by an SLAF helicopter today the 28th of September. In his keynote address Mr. Tamilselvan explained to the congregation the purpose of convening this meeting. "Reviewing the activities of the SLMM during the past 18 months and putting in place the necessary practical modalities relating to successfully upholding the ceasefire agreement", said Mr. Tamilselvan, and was the purpose of the meeting.
Strengthening and reactivating the local monitoring committees, he said, is very vital in interacting with the people who are the real stakeholders. Towards this end, Mr. Tamilselvan said that action had been taken to appoint special liaison officer in each of the district political offices so that the SLMM can have ready access in dealing with reported violations. The head of the SLMM appreciated the initiative and the SLMM district heads expressed satisfaction over this development and solicited the support of the LMC members to take the message of peace to the people. The LTTE Peace Secretariat, it was stressed, should take a leading and supportive role in this initiative. The LMC members, while soliciting their unstinted support, brought to the notice of Head of SLMM the various handicaps they face in carrying out their assigned tasks. Maj. Tellefsen assured them that he will bring about the necessary changes required to meet the needs of the people including normalization.
