
Security Forces and the LTTE meet at Vavunativu
A meeting between Batticaloa-Amparai Special Commander Col. Ramesh and the Sri Lankan Army Chief of Staff and East Overall Operations Commander Major General Shantha Kottegoda took place in the noman's land at Vavunativu in the Batticaloa District.
The discussions were mainly on ways and means of controlling the spate of violence and killings that have been taking place in the district nowadays especially since early April in order to restore normalcy there. They discussions were further on feasible plans for stepping up their efforts in this regard. Col. Ramesh did point out that the men of the state security forces were involved in these crimes and these men were in close collaboration with the renegade Karuna's gangs to actuate themselves in this spree. Kottegoda assured Ramesh that in his capacity in the position he had newly assumed for overall operations in the Eastern region that it would be henceforth his bounden duty and responsibility to keep the region under strict and constant surveillance, against the elements that go on these criminal spree. Both Ramesh and Kottegoda were further in agreement to co-ordinate the work of the LTTE and that of the state forces and to sincerely and faithfully co-operate with each other in the very serious and urgent need for curbing the spate of violence and killing which if left undeterred would sooner and speedily erode the mutual trust essentially required for the truce and the resumption and progress of the peace process the LTTE were reluctantly compelled to suspend about an year ago. Both the parties also resolutely agreed to work together to detect and identify the suspects and criminals of the category discussed. The meeting commenced at 10.30 a.m. and lasted two hours. Batticaloa-Amparai District Political Head, Mr. Kausalyan, LTTE Commanders Mr. Ramanan, Mr. Jeyarthan and Mr. Bavananthan, Deputy Director of the LTTE Peace Secretariat participated in the discussions.
