
Human Rights Commission inquires into complaints of landmines newly planted by security forces
The Human Rights Commission have begun their inquiries into the complaints lodged by people that landmines are planted by security forces in the Manatkadu area in Vadamaradchi. It is alleged that landmines are being planted by the army persons in areas outside their camps where people pass by. On account of these landmines the freedom of movement of the people is hindered. It's in respect of these complaints an official of the Jaffna Human Rights office has met the Army Commanding Officers and called for their explanations.
Although the officers explained that they planted landmines in the interest of their own security. Human Rights Commission Officials pointed out to the Commanding Officers that practice of planting landmines in areas where people generally move about or pass by is a violation of human rights.
