Status of UNICEF database on underage LTTE members
Second of the monthly update by the Child Protection Authority (CPA), Kilinochchi, February 2008
The UNICEF database of under-18 persons in the LTTE has remained static for more than four months now and continues to hold around 240 names. The database has remained static because of the inability of UNICEF to clear these cases due to the prevailing security situation.
This is the third publication of this table with update. In December 2007 and January 2008, CPA circulated the attached snapshot of this UNICEF database as seven categories in a table. The purpose of this snapshot is to elucidate the reality behind the number, 240. In February 2008, ICRC met, in Kilinochchi, about 20 of the Batticaloa cases from category 3 and 4 as preparation for reuniting them with their families in Batticaloa. The ICRC is still in the process of completing this project but the process has been delayed, despite the full cooperation from the LTTE to unite the children with their families. UNICEF has not informed CPA of any verification of released cases over the last two months. CPA will publish this table once a month with whatever updates that takes place in that month. Excel file of data of children killed and injured by Sri Lankan forces from September 2007 till January 2008 can be downloaded here.
Two seven minute video documentaries about the effects of the Sri Lankan military onslaught on the children can be downloaded here.
