
EU determines to grant continued support to NorthEast development - John Walls Cushnahan assures the
The LTTE delegation led by Mr. S.P. Tamilselvan, Head of the LTTE Political Wing, on a political mission to European countries met members of the European parliament who assured they would extend unstinted support to meet the urgent needs to develop the NorthEast irrespective of the conditions prevailing in the south.
Mr. Tamilselvan and his delegation met with Mr. John Walls Cushnahan, member of the European Parliament, Bjornebye, Norwegian Ambassador to Belgium, Ambassador Maricou, Head of Asia Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Herve Jouanjean, Deputy Director General, Deputy to Commissioner Patten and charge de affairs of the EU's role as "co-chair" on Friday 6th February 2004. Mr. Tamilselvan briefed the EU parliament members on the urgency for addressing the immediate needs of the people suffering due to the devastation caused by the war in the NorthEast. He explained them in detail the NorthEast development plans that is designed to meet the necessities required to alleviate the prevailing miseries and to facilitate for everything urgent to regain a normal unhindered living. The delegations briefing to the EU members exclusively focused on the reasonable and indispensable importance of extending all support direct to the NE so that the entire benefit could accrue to the people in the NorthEast and also to avoid every unreasonable tendency in the south to divert as usual the humanitarian assistance to serve their political and partisan ends especially at a time the elections are just around the corner. Mr. John Walls Cushnahan also reiterated his assurance further to impress the ensuing donor conference in Washington on the reasonability for an arrangement for the NorthEast to obtain the support of the international community directly to the developing organisations in the NorthEast of Srilanka.
