Young woman dragged out from her home in Batticaloa and stabbed to death by SLA
A young woman in the village of Viduthikal in Paduvankarai area in Batticaloa was dragged out from her home and stabbed to death on Saturday 7 July at 10.00pm by the Sri Lanka military as her mother screamed begging the military to stop the attack.
Balasuntharam Thavamany aged 22 was the murdered woman who was stabbed twelve times. In a similar incident of 4 July, Sri Lankan military came to a house in front of this house and abducted a father of three children. His where about remain unknown to this date. The young woman who was stabbed to death was sleeping with several other families in the home. It has become a practice in Batticalao among many families who are fearful of military death squads to gather in one home at night. It is worth noting that a similar practice of many families gathering in one home at night for safety was adopted in Jaffna since the military death squads started operating there almost 18 months ago. Following the killing of the young woman on 7 July, 300 families from the surrounding villages of Kuluvinamadu and Viduthikal, have displaced to Munaikadu, Muthalaikuda, and Kokkadicholai. The families could clearly identify the Sri Lankan military personnel from the SLA camp in Mavadimunmari who committed both these crimes. However, they are not coming forward to give the witness accounts out of fear for their own lives. They have however, informed the local member of parliament, P Ariyanenthiran, of the incidents, who in turn have spoken out about these two crimes to the media.
