Kilinochchi protests departure of UN agencies, warns genocide
Protests and picketing were held in Kilinochchi on Friday, 12 September, in front of UN agencies in Kilinochchi against their departure from Vanni.
Residents picketed in front of the UNHCR office and WFP office on A9 road from 6.00am demanding that the agencies should stay behind and continue their humanitarian work for the Vanni people facing a humanitarian crisis. The resident representatives of the two agencies held long discussions with the protesters and promised to raise the issue at the UN.
The protesters also blocked the traffic and UN vehicles leaving. Several appeals were handed to the UN resident representatives by Civilian Based Organizations as well as Teacher Associations. The appeals mostly said that the Sri Lankan Government is ordering the international agencies out as it readies for the final stage of the genocide of the Tamils.
