
Head of SLMM meets with LTTE Political Head
"Upholding the integrity of the CFA, especially in the current political context, is crucially important", said Major General Trond Furuhovde, Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission(SLMM) when he met with Mr. S. P. Tamilselvan, Head of the LTTE Political Wing in its Kilinochchi Head Quarters today the 28th February 2004.
Major General Furuhovde visited Kilinochchi for the first time since his resumption as Head of the SLMM for the second term. He briefed Mr. Tamilselvan on his visit to Batticaloa and Trincomalee where he met with the regional commanders and political heads. In reiterating the necessity to maintain the CFA the SLMM head said that the Tamil civilians in the areas not controlled by the military should be afforded the opportunity to exercise their franchise this time as one of the dividends of peace.
Mr. Tamilselvan assured the Head of the SLMM that the LTTE will take all endeavours necessary for the people's participation in the polls. "We are committed to ensure that the Tamil people are given a free option to exercise their voting right" emphasised Mr. Tamilselvan. The Head of the SLMM and Mr. Tamilselvan analysed at length, the various options to facilitate the voters in LTTE areas and the Head of the SLMM promised to take note of them and make use of it as a basis for his discussions with the Government on the subject of arranging polling booths. Associated with the Head of the SLMM were Mr. Hagrup Haukland, DHOM, Mr. Harri Katara, Legal Officer, Mr. Erik Vollen, ADC to HOM, Mr. Niels Viggo Nikolaisen, HLO.
