"CFA in deep crisis" - LTTE's Anton Balasingam tells facilitators in London

The Norwegian special envoy to Sri Lanka Mr.Erik Solheim had discussions with LTTE Chief Negotiator Mr. Anton Balasingam in London yesterday 31 August. Norway's Ambassador to Sri Lanka Mr.Hans Brattskar was also in the meeting along with Erik Solheim.

This meeting is believed to be a step taken by the Norwegian facilitators to find out ways and means of removing impediments, if any, in the recommencement of negotiations between the GoSL and the LTTE.

Mr. Balasingam expressed the LTTE's concern over the killings in the East and elsewhere carried out by armed groups, obviously with the assistance of the military intelligence units. This, Mr. Balasingam said is a clear violation of the CFA and will definitely not be helpful in creating a conducive environment for the parties to recommence the stalled peace process. "Unless the government takes effective measures to end this series of violence perpetrated on the LTTE, it is hard to imagine how one can seriously talk about recommencing peace talks" lamented Mr.Balasingam.

The facilitators assured that they would convey the views of Mr.Balasingam as LTTE chief negotiator, to the government when they visit Sri Lanka. While Mr. Erik Solheim is expected to be in Colombo on 13th, Mr. Hans Brattskar the Ambassador will get back to Colombo on Saturday. Erik Solheim, during his visit, will be meeting with the President, the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and then will visit Kilinochchi to meet with Mr. S. P. Tamilselvan, Head of the LTTE Political Wing.
